Mesmer's 27 Propositions (1779) are the founding text of Occidental subtle fluid science. At the summit of Mesmer's esoteric teaching lies the phenomenon of 'critical sleep' or somnambulism. In ordinary waking state, our external senses bombard us continuously with visible-world information — but blind us to the invisible Fluid. During the magnetic crisis, the external sense organs are suspended. Yet it is precisely at this moment that the inner sense awakens. This inner sense is the faculty of our central nervous system to enter direct contact with the Universal Fluid — and by extension, with the entire universe. The somnambulist becomes capable of seeing through bodies, diagnosing diseases without study, and perceiving past and future. Mesmer's image: a man on a mountaintop overlooking a river, seeing at once the distance the boat has traveled (past) and will travel (future). But the somnambulist translates: lacking vocabulary for the cosmic inner sense, he borrows the language of ordinary senses. He says 'I see' though his eyes are closed, 'I hear' though his ears are shut. A skilled physician must learn to decode this borrowed language.

Cycle 4 — Natural Accumulators

Mesmer teaches that water, animals, trees, plants AND minerals can all be charged with the invisible fire. Among all these natural accumulators, trees hold the first rank. Imagine a centuries-old oak as a massive natural battery. A trained physician who magnetizes it turns it into a gigantic healing reservoir. Mesmer's disciples conducted outdoor treatments — patients linked to great trees enriched by streams of magnetized water received gentle, rapid healing effects, and even the noisiest crises would calm into perfect serenity. Nature became the nurse!

Cycle 5 — Soul Telegraphy

In ordinary state, our thoughts translate into voice movements transmitted through air or ether to strike the listener's ear. But during magnetic sleep, the subtle Fluid bathing our nerves acts as a direct conductor. The movement generated by thought in the magnetizer's brain propagates through this Fluid, extending to indefinite distances, to strike immediately the inner sense of the somnambulant patient — without any air intermediary. Imagine two perfectly tuned instruments: pluck one string, the other vibrates across the room by resonance. Thus a reciprocity — a tacit agreement — is established between the magnetizer's will and the patient's. This is being 'in rapport': the magnetizer plucks the string of his will, and the somnambulist's inner sense instantly resonates.

Cycle 7 — The Physiology of Madness

Mesmer reduces all to the physics of the Universal Fluid. All wondrous apparitions, ecstasies, inexplicable visions and oracular prophecies are merely the effects of an unidentified natural somnambulism. And more radical: all shades of mental alienation, epilepsy, most convulsions, and madness itself are diseases belonging to this extraordinary crisis.

Madness is mechanical. It occurs when various organs become so obstructed they fall into a stuporous state. Natural sleep is then displaced toward the organs that should maintain wakefulness and reason.

Image: liquid in a vessel. To reflect the sky like a mirror, its surface must be in perfect calm and equilibrium. If troubled and agitated, the image becomes monstrous and deformed. Madness is exactly this: the individual's inner sense, agitated by obstructions, returns a broken reflection of the universe. Magnetism's role is to remove these obstacles — restoring the mind's water to clarity.

Cycle 8 — The Translator

During magnetic sleep, external sense organs are fully suspended. Yet the somnambulist says 'I see your illness' or 'I hear something distant'. How? The somnambulist translates. His inner sense — the central nervous system in direct contact with the Universal Fluid — receives the information. But lacking vocabulary for this cosmic sense, he borrows ordinary sense language. Like explaining 'red' to someone blind from birth using only touch and sound — 'warm and vibrant like a trumpet.' A skilled physician must learn to read this borrowed language correctly.

Cycle 9 — The Nature Clockmaker

Mesmer despised blind empiricism. Those who imitate magnetic passes without understanding the physical laws risk serious failures and promote superstition. Like a child imitating a conductor waving a baton before empty chairs — without musicians or the score, nothing but air-stirring. The magnetizer must absolutely understand the Fluid mechanism he manipulates.

The magnetizer is a fluid engineer, not a magician. Three missions: 1) Provoke and maintain the invisible fire. 2) Know and remove obstacles (obstructions) blocking circulation in nerves and fibers. 3) Foresee and direct the inevitable 'crisis' firmly until complete healing.

The body as a mill: the magnetizer is the miller, the Fluid is the water or wind turning the wheels. Random water direction floods or breaks — precise, reasoned direction mobilizes the mill, resolves the crisis, restores health.

Cycles 10+12 — The Direct Technique

In private correspondence, Mesmer revealed: Place one hand on the patient's back, slide it very slowly from the nape down the spine, inducing slight warmth. Simultaneously place the other hand on the diseased region (stomach, liver) to encircle the source. The magnetizer directs the Universal Fluid through his hands to reanimate muscle fiber action, lift obstructions, and provoke the beneficial crisis. Energy enters, circulates, repairs.

Cycle 13 — The Universe's Breathing

Mesmer observes the alternating motion of the Ocean (tides) and affirms this same cause extends to all parts of our globe. He names this cosmic mechanism intension and remission. Intension = increase of a property. Remission = its decrease. This universal pulsation is to the entire universe what inspiration and expiration are to the human body — it vivifies all that exists.

Imagine Earth as an immense chest breathing slowly. When the celestial Fluid flows in (influenced by sun, moon, planetary configurations): intension — sap rises in plants, illnesses accelerate, crises trigger. When it flows out: remission — nature calms. The magnetic physician imitates, concentrates and directs this invisible tide to heal.

Cycle 14 — Cosmic Instinct

Mesmer: we all possess an inner sense capable of grasping 'relations' of harmony or dissonance with the universe. This faculty — instinct — is smothered by reason in waking state. The migratory bird crossing oceans has no map or compass — it physically feels the Universal Fluid's currents, surfing the cosmic web. The human somnambulist simply recovers this primitive instinct. We are all migratory birds who forgot to feel the wind.

Cycle 17 — The Magic Lantern Trap

You will provoke somnambulistic crises. You will witness incredible phenomena. Without a cold mind and science firmly rooted, you will sink into the madness of illuminism! The 'magic lantern' example: savages seeing it for the first time believe the operators are demons. The same happens with ignorants facing somnambulism. Mesmer insists: no magic, no ghosts. God created matter and movement — that suffices to explain all wonders without supernatural recourse. Be physicists of the invisible, not gurus!

Cycle 18 — The Martyrdom of Truth

Teach these truths and you will be persecuted. Mesmer suffered like Galileo (prosecuted for Earth's rotation), Harvey (mocked for blood circulation), Socrates (played for ridicule). The Bishop of Moulins qualified Animal Magnetism as a 'harmful science' and 'work of darkness', accusing magnetizers of materialism.

Nothing is more false and injurious! How could a physician contemplating the infinite springs of the human machine become a materialist? On the contrary, true magnetism study fills the scholar with admiration for its Author. The magnetizer doesn't deal with darkness — he studies divine clockwork!

The practitioner's golden rule: Face crises → physicist's cold mind. Face detractors → remember Galileo. Face extraordinary phenomena → seek the physical law, never the miracle. Face obstructions → direct the Fluid precisely, like the miller directs water.
